Bears tame the Tigers in Florida

Estero, Florida- The Maine women’s basketball team was able to get a fifth place finish in the annual Gulf Coast Showcase on Sunday afternoon by defeating the LSU Tigers from the SEC by a 52-41 score at Germain Arena.

Chantelle Charles led the way with 14 points for the Black Bears. Charles also hauled down 2 rebounds and dished out 3 assists. Liz Wood chipped in with 12 points and 9 rebounds and Mikaela Gustafsson had 9 points and 6 rebounds.

The Black Bears shot 56 percent from the floor in the game and limited the Tigers to only 27 percent shooting from the field.

LSU (4-4) was led by Alexis Hyder who had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Maine would get a last second three pointer from Lauren Bodine at the buzzer of the opening quarter to take a three point lead after a back and forth opening ten minutes of play.

Maine would extend to a 16 point lead in the second quarter and would lead by 14 at the half. LSU never got closer than 8 points the rest of the way.

Maine, who improves to 5-3, will now return home to play in state opponent Colby on Tuesday night at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
