Hunter Smith earns fourth Down East Limousine male athlete of the week

Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations during the week to Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 177 past athlete of the week winners.

This week, we had five Rowell’s Garage male athlete of the week nominations. Foxcroft Academy had three of those nominations.Hunter Smith finished first in three events in an indoor track meet. Smith also hit a game tying shot and a game winning shot in a basketball win over Hermon. He also scored 25 points in a win over Central, that clinched a tournament spot for the Ponies. Smith also signed his national letter of intent to play football at the University of Maine.

Tino Ayala reached a career milestone by becoming the fifth wrestler at Foxcroft Academy to get 150 individual wins. Ayala also led the Ponies to a PVC Championship and won an individual PVC title. Drew Dankert made 10 three pointers in a game and finished third in our voting this week.

Other nominations this week include Kyle Case from Washington Academy and Andrew Prescott from Central high school.

Down East Limousine male athlete of the week

Hunter Smith- Foxcroft- indoor track- Smith placed first in the high jump with a personal and high school facility best of 6’6″, 1st in the triple jump 40’11”, and 1st in the long jump 20’8″. Scored 23 points including the game tying shot to beat the regulation buzzer, and the game winning shot to beat the buzzer in overtime in 61-60 win over Hermon. Scored 25 points in 89-68 win over Central. This is the fourth athlete of the week for Smith. He joins Ryan Rebar  (3) (2-17-13),Donnie Boyer (3) (6-2-13), Peter Boyer (3) (10-19-14), Brianna Skolfield (2) (12-15-13),Mackenzie Coiley (2) (1-26-14)
Julia Annis (2) (2-17-14), Tino Ayala (2) (12-28-14),Cameron Fadley (2-25-13),Jesse Provost (4-28-13), and Kaleb Smith (4-21-13) as student/athletes from Foxcroft Acadmey that have been named athlete of the week.

Runner up
Tino Ayala – Foxcroft – wrestling- the senior captain became the 5th wrestler in Foxcroft Academy history to reach 150 individuals wins. He also led the Foxcroft Wrestling Team to a PVC Championship, winning an individual PVC Championship Title in the 126 pound weight division in Ellsworth.

Other nominations

Drew Dankert- Foxcroft- basketball- scored 31 points on 10-11 shooting from 3 point range in 89-68 win over Central.

Kyle Case- Washington Academy- basketball- went 4-5 from three point range in 100-64 win over Narraguagus. Made two critical three pointers and a steal in 58-55 win over Old Town. One to tie, one to put them ahead for the eventual win.

Andrew Prescott- Central- basketball- scored 22 points, including 3 three pointers in 89-68 loss against Foxcroft.
