February 22, 2017

BANGOR- Erin Speed and Alivia Hunt combined for 35 points and 18 rebounds in leading the Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates to a 53-21 class C North girls quarterfinal win over Woodland on Wednesday morning.

PCHS went on a 10-0 run after falling behind 4-2. The Pirates outscored Woodland 11-4 in the second quarter to take a 23-10 halftime lead.

Speed scored nine points in the third quarter to help the Pirates take a commanding 40-18 lead heading into final quarter. Speed finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and two steals from the guard position. PCHS (15-4) will play a semifinal game on Friday, February 24th at 7:05 PM.

“Believe it or not, she (Speed) is one of our better rebounders,”PCHS coach Brian Gaw said. “For her size she has really good timing.”

Speed added, “we were about the same height as all of them.”

Hunt added 14 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. PCHS out rebounded the Dragons 37-20.

“She (Hunt) hustles to eat breakfast. Everywhere she goes, she hustles. She is as good of 5’6″ rebounder that I have ever had. I will match her up with others that are 5’6” going after the ball,”Gaw said. “In the back of my mind, I though Alivia would have a good game. She is not a good matchup for a lot of players that have to get out away from the basket. She is quick, athletic, and strong.”

Hunt added, “I felt like I was a little bit taller and a little bit stronger. It gives us a lot of confidence. We are playing really well and working well as a team. We have a lot of chemistry. I think we will carry that into the semifinals.”

Sara Almirante recorded 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Lexi Harris chipped in with six points and six rebounds. Hope Adkins put in two points.

Jennie Cox led the Dragons with nine points and five rebounds. Sadie Smith chipped in with eight points and three rebounds.. Shawna Monk had two points and seven rebounds, while Shawna Monk put in two points. Woodland finishes the season with a 12-8 record.
