Machias has huge third quarter in semifinal win over Easton

BANGOR- The Machias Bulldogs scored 31 points in the third quarter and rolled to a 68-37 win over Easton in a Maine Principals’ Association class D boys basketball game on Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs broke open a close game, by outscoring the Bears 31-9 in the third quarter. Jordan Grant scored 15 of his team high 19 points during the quarter.

Machias held a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and 24-20 at halftime. Bulldogs starter James Mersereau was limited to around five minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.

Mark Anthony took control near the basket, finishing with 17 points, 19 rebounds, two blocks, and two assists. Anthony had 11 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.

Machias put the game away with an 11-0 run to end the third quarter to take a commanding 55-29 lead. John Massard scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds. The Bulldogs out rebounded Easton 45-20.

Russell Hanscom scored seven points (all in fourth quarter), Mersereau added six points (all in third quarter) and seven rebounds. Machias (19-1) will play in the class D regional final on Saturday morning at 10:45 AM.

Jacob Flewelling led the Bears with 19 points, while Jordan Doody added eight points and eight rebounds. Easton finishes the season with a 13-7 record.
