Andrew Speed earns second McGuire Seasonal Services male athlete of the week

Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations during the week to Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 222 past athlete of the week winners.

This week, we had eight Rowell’s Garage male athlete of the week nominations. Andrew Speed had six hits, including two homers and nine RBI to help Central baseball go 2-1 this week.  Speed also was named athlete of the week on September 15th, 2013. He joins Max McHugh, Jordn Smith, Libby Cook, Sydney Allen, and Caleb Shaw as student/athletes from Central high school that have earned athlete of the week honors. McHugh earned the honor five times.

McGuire Seasonal Services male athlete of the week

Andrew Speed- Central- baseball- had two hits, including a home run and four RBI in 12-1 win over Penquis. Had two hits, including a double and RBI in 5-4 loss to Bucksport. Had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI in 10-3 win over Bangor Christian.

Runner up

Carter Ward- Mattanawcook- baseball- earned the win on the mound by allowing one run on two hits plus had a single in 8-6 win over Lee. Recorded two home runs, two RBI, and two runs in 5-1 win over Central. Had a hit, two RBI, and one run scored in 10-0 win over Stearns. Recorded two walks and two runs scored in two plate appearances in 20-2 win over Lee.

Other nominations 

Josh Perry- Nokomis- baseball- pitched a three hit complete game shutout with nine struck outs in 1-0 win over Erskine.

Caleb Shaw- Central- baseball- pitched a one hitter and struck out 11 plus hit a double in 12-1 win over Penquis.

Paul Branch- John Bapst- tennis- senior #1 singles player for the Crusaders He is 9-0 in regular season matches and 72-8 overall this season.

Taylor Schildroth- George Stevens- baseball- allowed one unearned run on five hits and one walk, while striking out six in 2-1 win over Dexter.

Beckett Slayton- George Stevens- baseball- recorded two hits, two walks, two runs scored, and two stolen bases in 2-1 win over Dexter.

Nathan Richards- Dexter- baseball- the freshman pitched a complete game four hitter in 4-1 win over George Stevens.
