Winslow softball rolls to prelim win over Presque Isle to set up quarterfinal with Old Town

Winslow scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Presque Isle 8-1 in a Maine Principals’ Association class B preliminary round game played Tuesday afternoon at Winslow.  

The game was scoreless up until the fifth inningz Haley Ward led off with a single, moved to second base on a passed ball and to third on a groundout. 

 After a walk and an error loaded the bases, Broghan Gagnon grounded into a fielder’s choice as Ward scored the go ahead run on a close play at home plate. Cassie Demers was called out on an infield fly behind 2nd base but a run scored on the dropped ball to make it 2-0.

Sarah Guimond knocked in two more runs with a single to centerfield. Guimond went from firsr to third on a passed ball that was located late by catcher Savannah Rodriguez who threw the ball into left field allowing Guimond to score the fifth  run of the inning.

Bailey Robbins capped the six run inning with a towering solo HR to left. Presque Isle scored a run in the top of the 6th. Amy Seeley singled with two outs. After a hit by pitch and an error, Allison Maclore singled to left to cut the lead to 6-1. Broghan Gagnon induced a grouder to short to end the inning. Winslow added two insurance runs in the 6th as Haley Ward again led off with a single, 

Alexa Petrovic reached on an error by pitcher Faith Leavitt. Ward scored on a passed ball and Petrovic scored on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Lachance.

 Presque Isle finishes their season at 6-11. Winslow (13-4) will play at Old Town on Thursday at 3:30 in a rematch of last year’s Northern Maine Championship game.
