UMaine Roundup- Soccer drops tough one, Field Hockey rolls

Both the University of Maine Womens soccer team and Field Hockey team were in action in non-conference play on Sunday afternoon.

In a neutral site game at Thornton Academy in Saco, the Black Bears Womens soccer team dropped a tough overtime decision to UMass.

Freshman Olivia Bamford scored her first collegiate goal in the first minute of action, but that would be the only goal on the day for the Bears.

Erin Doster scored for the Minutemen 35 minutes into the second half to tie it 1-1, and then Salma Anastasio got the game winner 1:47 into overtime.

UMass picks up their first win improving to 1-3-0, while Maine drops to 1-3-1.

Maine returns to Orono to host Bryant Thursday at 4 p.m.

 

At Richmond, Virginia the nationally ranked University of Maine Field Hockey team continued their success by defeating Richmond 4-1.

After a tight first half where the game was tied 1-1 at intermission, Maine got goals from Emily Hindle, Brianna Ricker, and Libby Riedl in an 8:30 span of the second half to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Madison Cummings scored less than two minutes into the game for the other Black Bear tally. Richmond (0-4) got a first half goal from Olivia Hubert. Maine attempted 22 shots in the game, compared to 8 by Richmond, with a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Maine returns to action Sunday in a neutral site game against Cornell at Burlington, Vermont scheduled for 1 p.m.
