Maine women, men pick up hockey wins

Both the University of Maine ice hockey teams were in action against Vermont Saturday at Alfond Arena.

On the womens side Saturday afternoon, Carly Jackson made 17 saves as Maine blanked Vermont 2-0.

Tereza Vanisova had a first period goal, and Anna Zikova added another in the second period, as Maine improved to 11-6-2, and 5-3-1 in Hockey East. Vanisova also added an assist, and Brooke Stacey assisted on both goals for the Bears. Vermont falls to 5-11-2, 3-7-1. The two teams will finish off their two game series Sunday at 2 p.m.

 

On the mens side Saturday evening, Maine was able to come up with three out of a possible four Hockey East points on the weekend with a 6-2 win over the Catamounts.

Nolan Vesey had two goals, Patrick Holway added a goal and two assists, Chase Pearson had a goal and an assist, and Mitch Fossier added three assists to lead Maine to the win. Jeremy Swayman had 39 saves and the Bears went 3-6 on the powerplay, to improve to 6-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in Hockey East.

Brian Bowen and Craig Puffer scored the goals for Vermont. Stefanos Lekkas made 28 saves, and the Catamounts went 2-5 on the powerplay. Vermont drops to 4-11-2, 1-6-2.

Maine hits the road next weekend for a two game non-conference series at Quinnipiac.
