Irving returns to help C’s to win, Bruins go extra time to pick up a W

It was 2 for 2 on the Boston professional sports front on Wednesday night, as the Celtics and Bruins both scored wins.

At TD Garden in Boston, Kyrie Irving returned after missing a game with a minor injury to score 33 points, to lead the Celtics past the Denver Nuggets 124-118.

Irving added seven assists for 24-6 Boston. Jaylen Brown scored 26 points and had five rebounds. Aron Baynes put in 17 points and had six rebounds, while Jayson Tatum had 15 points.

Gary Harris put in 36 points and dished out six assists for 15-13 Denver. Jamal Murray also had 28 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

Boston will host Utah Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

 

At Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Brad Marchand scored 35 seconds into overtime, to spark the Bruins to a 3-2 come from behind win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Thomas Tatar had given the Wings the lead with his ninth of the year in the second period, before Noel Acciari tied it early in the third for Boston at 1-1. The Wings regained the lead when Dylan Larkin scored at 11:34, but the Bruins forced overtime when David Pastrnak buried his 15th goal of the year with just 1:26 left in regulation.

Tuuka Rask won his fifth straight game for Boston with 31 saves. Former UMaine goalie Jimmy Howard took the loss with 29 saves for Detroit. Boston is now 15-9-4, winners of nine of their last 11 games. Detroit slips to 11-13-4.

Boston hosts Washington Thursday night at 7 p.m.
