December 16, 2017

HAMPDEN- The Hampden Academy girls basketball team built a 12 point first half lead, then had to rally from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat the Lawrence Bulldogs 49-43 in a Class A matchup at Hampden Academy Friday night.

10 first half points for Alydia Brillant had Hampden (3-0) in command 26-18 at the half, leading by as many as 12 in the first 16 minutes.

Lawrence (2-1), had the answer after intermission spinning off a 10-2 run to start the third to tie the game 28-28 with 2:36 left. The Bulldogs took their first lead on a pair of free throws by Camryn Caldwell with just 2.6 seconds left in the third. After the foul shots Brillant caught the inbounds pass at half court, spun away with one dribble, and heaved a shot just inside the half court line that found the bottom of the net just as the buzzer sounded, to regain a 31-30 lead for the Broncos

Lawrence didn’t go down without a fight, scoring 10 of the first 15 points of the fourth quarter to take their biggest lead at 40-36 with 4:11 to play. The Broncos worked the ball to center Bailey Donovan and guard Braylee Wildman over the course of the next 2:49, and found success in the lane and getting to the foul line. Over that stretch Donovan and Wildman connected on 8-10 from the line, and kept Lawrence at bay except for a three pointer by Molly Folsom with 33 seconds left. Hampden hit 14-17 from the line in the fourth quarter to earn the six point win, and was 18-23 for the game.

Brillant was the high scorer for Hampden with 13 points. Marissa Gilpin and Brooklyn Scott had eight points a piece, while Donovan finished with seven points and 10 rebounds. Folsom led Lawrence with 16 points (nine in fourth quarter), Keagan Alley had 10 points and six rebounds, while Brooklyn Lambert put in eight points.
