GUILFORD— Alivia Hunt scored nine of her game high 15 points in the first quarter to lead Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) to a 44-33 win over Mattanawcook in a class C girls basketball game played on Wednesday night.

The Pirates held a 15-8 lead after the first quarter and 21-13 at halftime. Mattanawcook scored the first eight points of the second half to even the score at 21.

“They (Mattanawcook) had a little pep talk at halftime and apparently my pep talk didn’t work very well,”PCHS coach Brian Gaw said. “We chucked it around the gym for a couple of minutes.”

Meagan Lemieux gave the Pirates a lead they wouldn’t give back when she made two free throws to make it 23-21. The freshman followed that with a basket to give PCHS a 25-21 lead. The Pirates outscored the Lynx 23-12 in the final 14 minutes of the game.

“I was happy with the way we responded,”Gaw said. “She (Lemieux) didn’t play like a freshman tonight. She played with confidence. I was really happy with the way she played.”

PCHS out rebounded the Lynx 34-17. Hunt was a big reason for that. She pulled down 12 rebounds. Hunt, Lexi Rowell (8), and Erin Speed (7) combined for 27 rebounds.

“She (Hunt) is a tough, Gritty, Athletic, and strong player. She came out real strong,”Gaw said. “She does everything for us, she is a good player.”

Speed had 12 points, five assists, and two blocks. Meagan Lemieux scored six points (all in the second half), Rowell and Olivia Riitano added four points each, while Bailey Lemieux chipped in with three points for the Pirates. PCHS (4-2) is scheduled to travel to Valley on Friday.

Tressa Libby led the Lynx with 12 points, five rebounds, three steals, and three blocks, Natalie Tilton scored eight points, while Emily Tolman added seven points. Kim Voisine filled up the stat sheet with six points, four assists, and four steals. Katie Tolman chipped in with two points. Mattanawcook (3-5) is scheduled to host Stearns on Friday night.
