UMaine hockey: men swept, women win again

Both the UMaine hockey teams were in action on Saturday afternoon/evening, as the men finished off a two game series at Northeastern and the women were at Merrimack.

In the mens game, Maine lost by the same score as Friday night, as Northeastern garnered a Hockey East sweep 5-3 at Matthews Arena in Boston.

Mitchell Fossier had a goal and an assist, and Chase Pearson had two assists for Maine who drops to 11-9-2, 5-6-1 Hockey East. The Bears have still gone 7-2-2 over their past 11 contests.

Maine had a 2-1 lead after one period on goals from Alexis Binner and Fossier. Northeastern regained the lead in the second period 3-2 on an even strength goal and a powerplay goal. The Huskies added a powerplay goal and an empty netter in the third period to make it 5-2. Nolan Vesey scored a late goal for the Black Bears.

Nolan Stevens and Eric Williams both had a goal and an assist for Northeastern, who improves to 14-5-3, 10-3-1. Cayden Primeau made 17 saves in the Huskies net, while freshman Jeremy Swayman made 32 for the Bears. Northeastern went 2-6 on the powerplay, while Maine was 1-3.

 

In the womens contest at Merrimack, Maine started slow but picked it up near the end of the second period and picked up a 5-1 Hockey East win at Lawler Rink in North Andover, Massachusetts.

After a Brittany Kucera gave Maine a 1-0 lead in first, the Merrimack Warriors evened the score on a goal from Katelyn Rae two minutes into the second. Late in the period, Maine got a goal from Michelle Weis at 17:51, and then another from Daria Tereshkina with three seconds left in the period to make it 3-1. The Bears added goals from Cailey Hutchinson and Tereza Vanisova in the third and extended their unbeaten streak to nine games (7-0-2).

Carly Jackson made 22 saves in the net for Maine, while Samantha Ridgewell made 23 in the losing effort for Merrimack. Maine is now 15-6-3 overall and 9-3-2 in Hockey East. Merrimack drops to 8-14-3, 3-10-2.

The men return to action at home Tuesday when they host UMass at 7 p.m. The womens team hosts Merrimack on Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m.
