EAST CORINTH– Sydney Allen needed 18 points to reach the 1000 point mark coming into the Central Red Devils class C clash with Bucksport on Wednesday night. Allen reached that mark when she made a three pointer with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter. Allen scored 27 points to lead Central to the 65-46 girls basketball victory.
Central jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead. Sydney’s younger sister Abi Allen made two 3-pointers in the first three minutes. Bucksport was able to keep it the deficit in single digits the entire first half. The Red Devils held a 17-11 lead after the first quarter and 35-28 at halftime.
“They (Bucksport) are really tough and never give up,”Sydney Allen said. They are always attacking the rim.”
Becoming the sixth student/athlete to reach a milestone at a school can be nerve-wracking. That was no different for the senior leader for the Red Devils. Allen missed four straight free throws. It will be difficult to find another time when that happened.
Allen became her smooth self in the third quarter when she converted a layup on a move that dazzled the crowd. She followed that up with the moment the Central faithful came to see. She stole the ball and nailed a three pointer that put her over the 1000 point mark. That gave the Red Devils a 42-29 lead. She joins Jenny Rollins, Hannah Pray, Bekah Campbell, Bre Skolfeld, and Ryan Rivera as student/athletes from Central high school to reach the milestone.
“I was definitely nervous in the first quarter. I think a lot of people could tell. I was bobbling it,”Sydney Allen said. “I held it together and got it over with.”
