Big first half helps Dexter girls basketball grab 14th win

DEXTER—Becca Batron scored six first quarter points as the Dexter Tigers girls basketball team jumped out to a 13-4 lead and held on for a 40-32 win over Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS).

Dexter extended the lead to 25-10 at halftime. Peyton Grant scored seven of her team high 13 points in the second quarter.

PVHS came out strong in the second half getting the deficit down to six. The Howlers were able to stay within striking distance thanks to Lexi Ireland scoring 12 of her game high 16 points in the second half, including going 6-6 from the free throw line. Kaylee Deering made two free throws late in the fourth quarter to help the Tigers secure the victory.

Ireland contributed 13 rebounds, two steals, and two assists to go along with her 16 points. Laney Harding put in seven points, Kortney McKechnie added six points, while Emily St. Cyr and Leine McKechnie chipped in with two and one respectively. PVHS (10-6) will play at Mattanawcook on Monday.

Grant had three assists and three steals to go along with her 13 points. Batron had 10 points and five rebounds, Cheyenne Beem filled up the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists, Avery Herrick recorded five points, five steals, and four rebounds, Danielle Cummings had three points and three steals, Deering chipped in with two points. Dexter (14-2) will host Bucksport on Monday.
