Strong defensive effort leads Maine to sixth straight win

Blanca Millan had 22 points Saturday afternoon as the Maine Black Bears topped the Binghamton Bearcats 61-38 at the Events Center in America East womens basketball action in Vestal, New York.

Maine used 55 percent shooting in the first half that allowed them to open up a 31-10 lead midway through the second quarter. Binghamton started 4-22 from the floor, before a 10-0 run got them within 31-20. Millan put back her own rebound for a bucket, and hit one of two from the line to increase the Maine lead back to 34-20 at the half.

More of the same in the second half as Maine opened up an 18 point lead in the third quarter, before increasing to their largest of the afternoon of 27 in the fourth quarter to help secure their sixth straight win. Binghamton went 13 minutes with only one field goal from the third into the fourth quarter, in their lowest point output of the year.

Millan added nine rebounds, five steals, and two blocks to her game high point total. Tanesha Sutton had 13 points and nine rebounds. Julie Brosseau chipped in 12 points. The Bears shot 46 percent from the field. Maine is now 15-8 overall and 8-2 in America East. Maine moves into a first place tie in the conference with Albany, as the Great Danes fell to UNH Saturday afternoon.

Binghamton (15-8, 6-4), had their four game winning streak snapped. The Bearcats were led by Imani Watkins who had 15 points. Kai Moon added 10 points and five rebounds. Binghamton only shot 25 percent from the floor on the day.

Maine will host Hartford Monday night at the Cross Insurance Center at 7 p.m.
