Winslow makes statement in girls basketball win over MDI to open 2018 tourney

BANGOR– the Maine Principals’ Association High School Basketball tournament has started and seeds mean nothing, just ask the Winslow Black Raiders.

The Black Raiders rolled to a 55-34 victory over Mount Desert Island (MDI) in a class B girls basketball quarterfinal game played Friday night at the Cross Insurance Center.

Winslow scored the first five points of the game and never trailed. The sixth seeded Black Raiders went on a 15-2 run that extended into the second quarter. Winslow outscored MDI 18-11 in the third quarter.

Maddy Candage led the Trojans with nine points and six rebounds. Julia Watras and Alexis Clarito put in five points each. MDI finishes the season with a 14-5 record.

Haley Ward powered the Black Raiders with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Meaghan Bernard chipped in with nine points and five rebounds., Brognan Gagnan added eight points and four rebounds.
