BANGOR– When the going gets tough the Presque Isle Wildcats Girls Basketball team look to Emily Wheaton.
Wheaton scored 18 of her game high 36 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead Presque Isle to a 58-53 win over Maine Central Institute (MCI) in a Maine Principals’ Association class B quarterfinal game on Saturday morning at the Cross Insurance Center.
Wheaton evened the score at 46 with a three pointer with 17 seconds in regulation to send the game to overtime. She put in nine points in overtime, including going 7-7 from the free throw line.
Presque Isle went on a 12-1 run to end the first half and take a 22-16 halftime lead. MCI went on an 8-0 they extended into the second half. The Wildcats responded with a 10-0 run to take a 32-25 lead.
The Huskies went on a 14-0 run to take a 39-34 advantage late in the third quarter. With the Wildcats down by three, they gave the ball to Wheaton and she took care of the rest.
April McAlpine put in 14 points to lead the Huskies. Sydney Farrar added 11 points, while Sydney Morton chipped in with 10. Christa Carr pulled down 17 rebounds. MCI finishes the season with a 13-6 record.
Wheaton added seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals to go with her game high point total. Savannah Rodriguez added eight points, 13 rebounds, and four steals. Presque Isle (14-5) will play Hermon or Caribou in a semifinal game on Wednesday afternoon.
