Emily Curtis dominates in leading Woodland to semifinal win

BANGOR– The roster says Emily Curtis is a freshman. Curtis looked like a veteran the way she dominated play in a 54-45 victory over Deer Isle-Stonington in a Maine Principals’ Association class D girls basketball semifinal game played Thursday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center

The Dragons scored the first basket and never trailed. They went on a 9-2 run and took a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Woodland went on a 10-2 run to start the second quarter and took a commanding 26-11 lead. The Mariners were not able to get closer than 10 until Lily Gray made a three pointer with 52 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 51-43. Sadie Smith made three free throws down the stretch to secure the win for the Dragons.

Curtis finished with a game high 24 points. She also had 17 rebounds and six blocks. Smith put in 16 points, including 10 in the first half. Katie Erskine filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Woodland (17-3) will play Southern Aroostook or Katahdin in the Northern Maine final on Saturday morning at 9:05.

Gray scored a team high 19 points, including 5 three pointers for the Mariners. Bri Limeburner recorded eight points, five rebounds, and four steals, while Katie Hutchinson pulled down 10 rebounds. Deer Isle-Stonington finishes the season with a 17-1 record.
