Hayward helps Woodland pull away in semifinal win

February 22, 2018

BANGOR, Me- Drew Hayward scored 14 second half points Thursday night on his way to a game high 22 points, to lead the Woodland Dragons to a 63-50 Class D boys semifinal basketball win over the Schenck Wolverines at the Cross Insurance Center.

A back and forth opening quarter saw Riley Dionne putting in six early points for Schenck, and Justin Worden seven for Woodland as the teams were tied at 16-16 after eight minutes of play.

Woodland had the two biggest leads of the first half at four points twice. With the score 26-22 and 2.9 seconds left in the first half, Schencks Travis Thompson let one fly from half court that banked in off the glass as the buzzer sounded cutting the Dragons lead to 26-25 at the half.

Schenck (10-11), used that momentum to begin the third quarter. An unconventional three point play from Colby Hannan put the Wolverines back in the lead 28-26. A Dionne basket and a three pointer from freshman guard Tyrone Davis finished up an 11-0 flurry, and matched Schencks biggest lead of seven at 33-26. The Dragons then took the game over. Woodland went on a 14-0 run, highlighted by three point baskets by Chris Plissey, Gavin Gardner, and Hayward to make it 40-33. Woodland held a 44-36 advantage after three.

The fourth quarter also belonged to the Dragons from Baileyville. A seven point quarter from Plissey, and a 19 point quarter overall, allowed Woodland to push the lead to as many as 17. Schenck never got closer than 10, as Woodland punched their ticket to championship Saturday.

Schenck was led by Isaac Adams who had 12 points. Hannan added 11, while Dionne and Thompson both chipped in 10 points a piece.

For Woodland (17-3), along with Hayward, Plissey finished with 18 points and five rebounds, with 12 big points in second half. Worden had nine points, while Gardner finished with eight. Woodland will face Jonesport-Beals in the Class D North regional final Saturday at 10:45 a.m.
