Dexter girls soccer gets by Orono in double overtime to stay undefeated

September 17, 2018

DEXTER- The Dexter Tigers girls soccer team didn’t hold a lead for 88 minutes 12 seconds on Monday afternoon. They held their only lead when Hannah Dorman scored her second goal with 1:47 remaining in double overtime to give the Tigers a 4-3 win over Orono.

Maggie Coutts gave the Red Riots a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the contest. The Tigers responded nine minutes later when Cloe Mountain drilled a long shot into the goal for the second straight game. This time from 25 yards out. Mountain did it from about 35 yards away to get the scoring started in a 8-0 Dexter win over Bucksport on Thursday.

Carley Hartery put the Red Riots ahead 2-1 with 6:34 left in the first half. Orono would keep that one goal advantage into halftime.

Freshman Torrey Hughes would even things up for the Tigers six minutes into the second half. Hughes like Mountain earlier showed off a strong foot from about 25 yards out.

Orono took their final lead with 26:03 remaining in second half when a loose ball went off a Dexter defender and into the goal.

Dorman evened up the score with 13:14 remaining. The Tigers had plenty of chances, outshooting the Red Riots 19-7. Dexter had 13 corner attempts in the game, including seven in the second half.

“We weren’t active enough,”Dexter coach Jody Grant said. “I thought all day on free kick situations we didn’t go get the ball enough.”

The Tigers controlled the ball for the first five minute overtime but couldn’t convert. With the rain coming down and the game looking like it was going to end in a draw Dorman ended the game 2:13 into the second overtime.

“We were down 1-0, 2-1, 3-2. On a day I didn’t think we were connected. We played in spurts. As far as having 11 kids being on the same page it was a struggle at times,”Grant said. “Give them credit for that. (Orono coach) Cid (Dyjak) does a great job. They (Orono) are always one of the best skilled teams, one of the best coached teams that we play and that had a lot to do with it.”

Dorman added, “We knew this would be one of our hardest games.”

Dexter (6-0) is averaging seven goals per game while allowing only eight total goals through their first six games. Addyson Herrick recorded one save for the Tigers. Dexter will travel to Central on Saturday morning. Anna Drinkert had seven saves for the Red Riots. Orono (2-1-2) will host George Stevens on Wednesday.
