Bears knock down 16 from arc to stun Tarheels

The University of Maine women’s basketball team knocked down 16 three pointers Sunday afternoon, and went on to upset the North Carolina Tarheels 85-73 at Carmichael Arena in Durham, North Carolina in non-conference action.

Maine (5-2) did not trail in the opening quarter as the score was tied 18-18 after the first 10 minutes. UNC (5-4) led by three in the second quarter, before the Black Bears closed the half on a 22-7 run to take a 44-32 lead into halftime on the strength of 10 three pointers. The visitors continued to lead in the third quarter, and grabbed their biggest lead when Maeve Carroll scored just before the buzzer to make it 62-45. Maine led by as many as 21 in winning their third straight game, and the first ever against the ACC Tarheels (1-4). North Carolina has now lost three straight.

Blanca Millan led the way for Maine with 21 points, four rebounds, and seven assists. Millan moves into eighth place on the all time steals list at Maine, and just three away from moving into seventh place. Tanesha Sutton had 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Dor Saar had 15 points and nine assists. Rounding out the double digit scorers for the Bears was Parise Rossignol with 14, and Kelly Fogarty with 12. Fogartys points all came on three pointers (4-7). Maine was 16-33 from the arc in the game (48.5%). Janelle Bailey had 21 points and 10 rebounds for UNC, while Stephanie Watts had 16 points. The 16 threes ties a school record for Maine, and the 85 points were the most against a Division I opponent since scoring 87 against UNH in 2015.

Maine finishes up a five game road trip on Tuesday night at 7 pm when they travel to Harvard to battle the Crimson. The Bears are currently 3-1 on the trip.
