Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations during the week to Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 298 past athlete of the week winners.
This week, we had three Rowell’s Garage female athlete of the week nominations. Leine McKechnie powered the Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS) Howlers to their second state in the past three seasons. McKechnie pitches a no hitter in the regional final game. She followed that up with a dominating 12 strikeout performance in the state title game. She also reached base six times in the championship win over Greenville. McKechnie will enter her senior season with 13 athlete of the week honors. The record is held by Kolleen Bouchard of Houlton who finished with 19.
The Charles Inn female athlete of the week
- Leine McKechnie- PVHS – softball- pitched a no hitter with 11 strikeouts in 6-1 win over Stearns in class D regional final. Broke the school record of 700 strikeouts during the game and also hit the go ahead homerun . Had 12 strikeouts and walked three in 11-6 win over Greenville in class D state game. . She walked four times and had two singles. She also scored three times.

- Libby Hewes- Brewer- Softball- allowed only four hits in 7-1 class B state championship win over York.
Other nominations
- Avery Herrick- Dexter – Softball – allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out 12 and had game winning hit in eighth inning in 3-2 win over Narraguagus in class C regional final.
