Central boys pull away from MA with strong second half

EAST CORINTH, Me- The Central Red Devils put four starters in double figures on Tuesday night and scored 49 second half points to pull away from the Mattanawcook Lynx 76-53 in Class C North boys basketball at Central High School.

Mattanawcook (0-2) had an early lead and their biggest of the contest at 7-3 in the first quarter. The Red Devils and Lynx would then swap two point leads and the first ended tied 11-11. Central (2-0) started to take over some in the second quarter taking a seven point lead on three different occasions including at the half by a 27-20 score. The hosts would pull away in the third quarter outscoring MA 24-7 and stretching to a 24 point lead, taking advantage of some Mattanawcook turnovers and easy baskets the other way. Central continued to build the momentum as the lead would grow to as many as 30 in the fourth quarter led by 19 second half points (12 in fourth quarter) from guard Simon Allen to start the new season with two straight wins. Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the final eight minutes as the Lynx outscored the Devils 26-25. Central also knocked down eight three-pointers on the night, compared to three for Mattanawcook.

Allen finished as the games high scorer with 27 points for the Red Devils including 7-7 from the foul line. Alex Hewitt filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Bryce Burns added 11 points, while Scott Ferrie had 10 points and eight rebounds. The Lynx were led by Maddox Capps who had 12 points. Cody Hanscom also had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Jackson Weatherbee chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.

Up next for Central is a trip to George Stevens on Thursday night, while Mattanawcook Academy will host Calais next Tuesday.
