Ellis helps John Bapst girls top Houlton in double overtime

BANGOR, Maine- Sydney Ellis scored a game high 18 points, including a three-pointer with six seconds left to send it to overtime as the John Bapst Crusaders went on to defeat the Houlton Shiretowners 45-41 in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Johnston Gymnasium at Eastern Maine Community College in Class B North girls basketball.

After the teams swapped early hoops, Houlton (7-5) went on a 7-1 run to take a 9-3 lead and led 9-5 after one quarter. Rebecca Howe had an early seven points for the Shires. After John Bapst cut it to 9-8, Houlton went on a 7-0 run to take the biggest lead of the game at 16-8. The Crusaders scored six of the final seven points though to cut it to 17-14 at halftime.

Emily Mock tied it early in the third quarter for John Bapst (6-3) at 17-17, but Houlton was still able to come out with the lead after three at 24-22. The Crusaders finally took their first lead in the fourth quarter, pushing to a six point lead when Jayda Smith scored on a fastbreak layup to make it 32-26 with 4:20 left. The Shires weren’t done. Mia Henderson knocked down a three-pointer to cut it to 32-31 with 1:45 to go, and then Howe tied it with a 1-2 effort from the line with under a minute on the clock. Taegan Ewings then gave Houlton the lead with a three point play with 22 seconds left. John Bapst had the answer when Ellis would knock down the three-pointer with 6.6 seconds remaining, sending the game to the first extra session. The contest wouldn’t end there as the teams each scored four points in the overtime, including a 1-2 trip to the line by Ewings with 2.9 seconds left to send it to yet another extra period. The Crusaders went on to outscore the Shires 6-2 in the second overtime, sparked by a pair of big baskets from Kate Harriman to pick up the win.

Ellis added eight rebounds to go along with her game high point total in the John Bapst win. Mock had seven points, while Jamie McQuarrie had six. Lacey Scanlon added five points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Smith also had five points, while Harriman had four with the two baskets in the second overtime. The Crusaders are at Orono Tuesday night. Howe led Houlton with 13 points and 14 rebounds. M. Henderson had 10 points and six rebounds. O. Henderson had seven points and six rebounds. Ewings also had seven points and five rebounds. Drew Warman and Abbie Worthley each also added two points. The Shires play at Caribou Tuesday night.
