PCHS track and field preview

April 12, 2022

The Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates track and field team has growing numbers and high hopes.

“Last season we were low on numbers after losing the previous season, but most of the team qualified for PVCs, and several athletes placed. Our girls 4x100m relay and several girls as individuals qualified for States, our best finish was 5th in Girls Discus,” PCHS coach Tom Panciera said. “This year we have 22 athletes total, which is the biggest track team I’ve had. Hoping that as more students discover how fun and rewarding Track and Field can be, that the program will continue to grow. On the girls side, most of last years team has returned, and we gained several new faces. This will add depth to our relay and increase the amount of events we compete in. Javelin, Discus, 100m, and 4x100m will be their strong events”

The Pirates are hoping to send more athletes to stares. The boys squad should be exciting with athletes trying new events.

“The boys side is exciting because there is so much that we will be figuring out as we go along. There seems to be a good mix of field and running events and several have expressed interest in trying new events, so it should be a fun season,” Panciera said. “Overall, this season should be really fun.
I’m excited with what I’m seeing so far out of my new athletes, and I have high hopes for the ones returning. We want to send greater numbers to States this year, and with the New England championships returning, it gives us something else to work towards.”
