Central High School 2022 baseball preview

April 13, 2022

The Central Red Devils baseball team has a good mix of veterans and young talent as they are in hopes to improve from their eight wins last season.

“I am expecting to have a very competitive group. Although we did lose six starters, we are bringing in a very solid freshmen class to mix in with some strong returning starters,” Central coach Pete Speed said. “Junior Benjamin Speed who had a very strong sophomore year on both sides will provide some big offense and fill multiple holes defensively and is looking to get some innings on the mound. Senior Simon Allen who pitched some big games last year is looking sharp again this year. He will add a very good bat in the middle of the order. Also a very good defensive outfielder to lock down center field. Senior Bryce Burns, another returning starter is going to be a huge factor in the offense. Incredible athletic ability and someone you do not want to see on the bases. Freshmen class has Hayden Strout, who looks to be a big part of the rotation, big bat, and can fill a big spot at first and outfield if needed. Bryce Cadieux, a tough player who will see lots of innings behind the plate. Jakson Pollock, another athletic freshman who has the versatility to fill holes wherever needed.”

The Red Devils will try and find some team chemistry early on. Central will have a tough schedule and will be looking for a few more pitchers to get through. The schedule should prepared them well for postseason play.

“We are hoping to build some chemistry early. Get better ideas of where guys will be best suited to give us the best chance to be competitive. Hoping to find a few more arms to get us through the tough stretch near the end of the year where we seem to have a lot of games piled up,” Speed said. “really hoping to put together a strong defensive team. We have some athletic players that will hopefully get comfortable in their role, pick things up quick, and cut down on mental mistakes. Hoping we can make up for some inexperienced bats by playing good defense and not giving up extra outs. I believe if we can get through the first half of the season and get kids to feel comfortable in what they are expected to do we can finish strong.”

Central is scheduled to open the season on April 20th at Mattanawcook. The home opener is scheduled for April 25th against Foxcroft Academy.
