Maine Athletics: Softball drops finale, baseball walks it off for a sweep

The University of Maine baseball and softball teams finished off their three game America East series against UMass-Lowell and Binghamton respectively in Orono on Sunday afternoon.

At Kessock Field- Maine held an early 4-0 lead after two innings, but Binghamton rallied back to take a 10-6 victory in 10 innings in the rubber game of the series. Kya Enos and Izzy Nieblas had three hits and two RBI to lead Maine, while Grace McGouldrick added a hit and two RBI as well. Caitlyn Fallon (3-3) took the loss in the circle in relief of starter Gabbie Siciliano. Fallon allowed three earned runs on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Chloe Morgan had two hits and four RBI, and Alex Musial had the game winning double for the Bearcats. Binghamton is now 16-19, 3-6 in America East. Maine (7-31, 3-8) plays a doubleheader on the road at UMass-Lowell on Wednesday afternoon.

At Mahaney Diamond- The Maine baseball team trailed 6-3 in the eighth inning, only to score two in the eighth and two in the ninth to walk it off and sweep the weekend series with their ninth straight victory 7-6 over UMass-Lowell. Scout Knotts reached on an error to start the bottom of the eighth, and then Jeremiah Jenkins took the first pitch and went opposite field to left for a two-run homerun to cut it to 6-5. In their last at bat, Jordan Schulefand led off with a single and with one out Quinn McDaniel reached on an infield hit. Joe Bramanti then worked a walk to load the bases, and Knotts tied it when he was hit with a pitch. The Black Bears walked it off when Jenkins took a 3-2 pitch low for a free pass to force in McDaniel with the winning run. McDaniel and Jenkins had three hits a piece and Colin Plante had two to pace the hosts. Schulefand (4-1) had 2.0 perfect innings on the hill with three strikeouts to get the win in relief of Brett Erwin who went the first 5.1 innings. Cedric Rose had two hits for UMass-Lowell, and Sal Fusco (1-2) who started the ninth took the pitching loss. The Riverhawks are now 15-23, 7-11 in America East. Maine (19-14, 15-3) will play a single non-conference game at Merrimack on Wednesday, before hosting a three game conference series at Mahaney with Hartford next weekend.
