CMCC softball and SMCC baseball headed to the USCAA Small College World Series

The softball team from Central Maine Community College, and the baseball team from Southern Maine Community College are both headed to the USCAA Small College World Series in Dubois, Pennsylvania next week to compete for a National Championship. The World Series on both the softball and baseball side are a double elimination format.

The CMCC Mustangs softball team (22-10-1) is making their first ever appearance in the national tournament getting an at larhe bid and is the #5 seed. They will play the #4 seed Penn State Schuylkill (24-11) on Monday at 2 p.m. The Mustangs have been led offensively by freshman Emily Wormwood, as she is hitting .462 with four homeruns and 39 RBI. Also first year players Olivia Gallan (.377 avg/1 HR/19 RBI), Olivia Scott (.333/1/30), Emily Sanfacon (.350/0/15), and former Dexter High standout Avery Herrick (.350/0/33) have also had solid seasons at the plate. Gallan also leads the entire USCAA with 47 stolen bases. Junior Haley Fernald is leading the team with 43 RBI and hitting .406, while junior Abby Ferland is at .358 with 13 knocked in. CMCC hits .360 collectively. Herrick has been the leader in the circle with a 10-3 record and a 2.47 earned run average. She has struckout 127 in 105 innings and has 13 complete games pitched. The Mustangs didn’t have a conference season as several teams in the YSCC didn’t field a team, with CMCC being the lone competitor in that conference this spring playing a schedule that consisted of Division III opponents and other small colleges out of state. Florida National, who is the top seed for the tournament, is the defending national champion.

CM Mustangs softball gets a bid to USCAA nationals

 

The SMCC Seawolves baseball team (24-11) received their bid by defeating CMCC in the YSCC Title game. It is the fifth straight conference championship for SMCC. The Seawolves are the #8 seed and will play #9 seed Mid-Atlantic Christian (17-33) on Monday at 11 a.m. SMCC has all freshman on their roster. At the plate, they’ve been led by Justin Colon who is the team leader in five categories batting at .360, and leads in RBI with 41, homeruns with five, triples with five, steals with 37, and runs scored with 46. Derek Hoh (.374/0 HR/25 RBI), Anthony Sayers (.333/0/37), Cameron Cousins (.319/1/9), Joseph Townsend (.310/1/28), Gabriel Rivera (.309/1/35), Andrew Martin (.290/1/30), and Sam Keblinsky (.287/0/34) have also made very strong contributions. Kalin Marum leads the pitching staff with a 7-2 record and a 3.10 earned run average. He has fanned 48 hitters in 40.2 innings. Sayers has also been very solid out of the bullpen picking up four saves with a 0.60 ERA striking out 24 in 15.0 innings, with only one earned run allowed in 11 appearances. Penn State Dubois (24-12), who is the host of the World Series and has won the last three national titles, is the top seed.
