SKOWHEGAN, Maine- The Brunswick Dragons rushed for eight touchdowns and churned out 460 yards on the ground to remain unbeaten in Class B North with a 65-42 win over Skowhegan Friday night at Clark Field at Skowhegan Area High School.
Brunswick built a 51-14 halftime lead behind the legs of running backs Hunter Garrett and Ben Palizay who combined for four rushing touchdowns in the first half alone.
Skowhegan cut into the lead with a third quarter touchdown on a 34 yard pass to Tyler Scott from quarterback Garrett McSweeney, then a long 60 yard touchdown run by Darrione Brown to begin the fourth quarter. After recovering an onside kick, McSweeney connected on a 50 yard touchdown pass, and after the second consecutive two-point conversion, it was 51-36 with still 11:30 to play.
A pair of Jesse Devereaux touchdown runs of 16 and 27 yards two minutes apart midway through the fourth quarter though would seal it for the Dragons as Brunswick moved to 5-0.
Devereaux finished with 18 carries, 173 yards, and three touchdowns. Garrett had 9 carries, 155 yards, and three touchdowns and Palizay had 6 rushes, 88 yards and two touchdowns and also had one reception for 45 yards and a score as well, as the Dragons offense rolled up 505 total yards. Brunswick only attempted four passes in the game. Senior quarterback Christian Jenson was 1-2, 45 yards, and a touchdown.
For Skowhegan (3-2) McSweeney was 8-19 passing, 157 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Sophomore quarterback Marcus Christopher came into the game late and went 2-5 passing, 30 yards, and a touchdown to another sophomore Colby Miller. The Indians finished with 302 yards of offense after being held to just 74 yards in the first half.
Both teams return to action next Friday night. In a battle of unbeatens the Brewer Witches (5-0) travel to Brunswick to take their shot at the Dragons at 7 p.m., while Skowhegan also plays at 7 p.m. when they travel to Oakland to face Messalonskee.
