Leine McKechnie earns Roadrunner Taxi female athlete of the week: McKechnie is ninth student/athlete to earn at least five athlete of the week honors

Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations during the week to Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 226 past athlete of the week winners.

This week, we had six Rowell’s Garage female athlete of the week nominations. Leine McKechnie allowed one hit and struck out 30 in 14 innings to help the Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS) Howlers win two championship games. McKechnie also smacked a three run home run in helping the Howlers defeat Richmond in the class D state title game. That snapped Richmond’s 88 game winning streak.

McKechnie finishes her freshman year with five athlete of the week honors. She joins Max McHugh (Central), Taylor Schildroth (George Stevens),Karli Theberge (Hermon), Kolleen Bouchard (Houlton), Isaiah Bess (Penquis), Justin Thompson (Schenck),Parise Rossignol(Van Buren), and Kenzie Worcester (Washburn) as student/athletes that have been named athlete of the week at least five times.

Leine McKechnie- PVHS – softball- pitches a one-hitter with 19 strikeouts in 3-0 win in eight inning over Southern Aroostook in class D regional final. Pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and hit a 3 run homer in 4-0 win over Richmond in class D state title game. It snapped Richmond’s 88 game winning streak.

McKenna Smith- Old Town- softball- pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and no walks in 1-0 class B regional final victory over Oceanside in eight innings. Pitched a three-hitter and struck out 19 in 2-0 win over Fryeburg in class B state title game.

Other nominations

Chloe Jones- Oceanside – softball- pitched a six-hitter with 13 strikeouts in 1-0 eight inning loss to Old Town in class B regional final.

Madyson Robichaud- Bucksport – softball- hit a two run homer in the seventh inning in 2-1 win over Mattanawcook in class C regional final.

Katelin Saunders- Bucksport- softball- pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts in 2-1 class C regional final win over Mattanawcook. Pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts while allowing one unearned run in 2-1 win over Madison in class C state title game.

Haley McLaughlin- Mattanawcook- softball- pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts in 2-1 class C regional final loss to Bucksport.
