Libby Dunivan leads strong Nokomis attack in season opening victory

PITTSFIELD— The Nokomis Warriors softball team has a roster full of freshmen and sophomores. The two seniors in coach John McLellan’s lineup came up big on Wednesday afternoon. Libby Dunivan pitched a three hitter and struck out 10, while also recording four hits, four runs scored, and six RBI in a 25-0 victory over Maine Central Institute (MCI) at Manson Park. Audrey Davis is the other senior in the lineup. She also went 4-5, scored four runs, stole two bases, and had one RBI from the lead off spot.

Dunivan had a big lead before even getting inside the circle for the first inning. Her teammates stole five bases and took advantage of three Huskies errors to put seven runs on the board in the top of the first inning.

“That was a great confidence builder, we could relax a little bit'”Dunivan said. “We did a great job putting runs on the board.”

Brittany Bubar smacked a three homer in the second inning to give the Warriors a 10-0 lead. Dunivan and Austin Leighton combined for eight hits, seven runs scored, and nine RBI from the 3/4 spots in the lineup. The Warriors had 10 different batters with at least one hit, seven hitters had at least two hits. Maci Leali, Caitlin Tasker, and Sabrina Champluvier combined for six hits, six runs scored, and four RBI at the bottom of the order.

McLellan said, “That is a huge confidence boost. We had some tough preseason games, now they have some confidence going into the next game, which will be a tough one. Everyone up and down the order were hitting.”

Aren Herrick recorded three hits, three runs scored, and three RBI. Leighton had four hits, three runs scored, and three RBI, Bubar added two hits, two runs scored, and four RBI. Chelsie Crocker hit a three run home run in the fifth inning. Leali had three hits, three runs scored, and two RBI, while Tasker had two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.

The Warriors will try and use this game as a confidence boost going into their home opener against a tough Winslow team on Friday afternoon.

“We only start two seniors, everyone else is sophomores or freshmen,” McLellan said.”Hopefully by the second week we will have our rhythm, Games like this where we could get everyone in the game helps.”
