Maine drops home game against National power North Carolina in Field Hockey Sunday

The University of Maine Field Hockey team fell for only the second time this season on Sunday morning, as ACC power and #3 team in the country North Carolina topped the Bears by a score of 3-1 at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.

Lauren Moyer opened the scoring for the Tarheels on assists from Julia Young and Gab Major 7:04 into the first half to make it 1-0. It was the fifth goal of the season for Moyer.

Maine tied the game 10:42 later as Madison Cummings scored her 10th of the season unassisted off a rebound to knot the score 1-1.

But just 2:36 after the tying goal, UNC regained the lead when Moyer scored her second of the game on an assist by Caroline Plyler to make it 2-1.

Catherine Hayden added an insurance goal 8:15 into the second half scoring an unassisted marker on a rebound to make it 3-1. The goal was Haydens second of the year.

Overall UNC had six shots on goal to Maines three and the Tarheels also had eight corner opportunities compared to three for the Bears. The game was a homecoming for Kristy Bernatchez who is a senior at North Carolina. Bernatchez played high school field hockey at Messalonskee in Oakland, Maine.

UNC improves to 6-2 overall on the season and will return home to host the #1 team in the country Syracuse in a huge ACC conference matchup on Friday at 6 p.m. Maine falls to 6-2 and will hit the road for another non conference matchup at Northeastern Saturday at 2 p.m.
