BREWER, Maine- Senior running back Trey Wood ran for 313 yards and five touchdowns Friday night as the Brewer Witches remained unbeaten in Class B North with a 54-41 victory over previously undefeated Skowhegan at Doyle Field.

After a fast Skowhegan start that saw the visiting Indians take an 8-0 just 18 seconds into the game on a 54 yard strike from quarterback Garrett McSweeney, that was fumbled and picked up in the endzone for the Skowhegan score, the Witches responded. Just over four minutes later, Wood scored his first touchdown of the night to even the score at 8-8.

When Cameron Barnes hauled in a 21 yard touchdown from McSweeney, Skowhegan had the lead back just under two minutes later at 15-8. But the Witches ran off 20 straight points in the next 10 or so minutes of action to take a 28-15 lead, that was helped by two punts that the Indians fumbled to give Brewer good field position. A touchdown run by Zac Duncan of 8 yards, and two more Wood touchdown runs of 6 and 31, helped the Witches build a 13 point lead almost halfway through the second quarter.

Skowhegan tied the score though as Barnes caught his second score of the night from McSweeney, and running back Kobe Bailey snuck in for a short one yard run just before the half to tie the score at 28-28 at halftime.

A back and forth third quarter saw Brewer regain the lead when quarterback Cody Wood scored on a 30 yard run on a naked bootleg to make it 34-28. Barnes caught his third touchdown pass from McSweeney to put the Indians back up 35-34 just over two minutes later. Duncan found paydirt for the second time on a 9 yard run to make it 40-35 Brewer, before receiver John Bell hauled in another McSweeney pass for the Indians to put Skowhegan back up 41-40 at the end of three quarters.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Brewer Witches. Wood capped off his night with two 20 yard touchdown runs to help improve his team to 4-0.

Skowhegan (3-1) got a great night out of their starting quarterback. McSweeney finished 22-34 passing, 394 yards, and five touchdowns. Bell had 7 receptions, 74 yards and a score while Barnes had three catches, all three for touchdowns, and 64 yards receiving. The Indians only managed 48 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Wood passed the 300 yards on the ground with 43 carries on the night. QB Cody Wood was 3-6 passing for 70 yards and also ran 4 times for a total net of 23 yards and a score. Brewer had 382 yards rushing in the contest.

Both teams will play their next games next Friday at 7 p.m. Brewer will hit the road to battle Cony while Skowhegan will host Brunswick.
