Bangor- Sigi Koizar had 16 points including four 3 pointers and 13 other players got onto the scoring sheet for the UMaine Women’s basketball team as they defeated Colby College 82-42 Tuesday night at the Cross Insurance Center.
Maine was able to force some early Colby turnovers and rode some hot shooting in the first two quarters beginning the game on a 18-0 run igniting them to a 17 point lead after the opening quarter and then another 9-0 run to close the end of the second quarter helping to extend to a 30 point lead at halftime at 47-17. And the White Mules from Waterville would get no closer.
Colby (4-1) turned the ball over 20 times in the contest resulting in 24 Black Bear points and only shot 29 percent from the field in the game (15-51). Maine also outrebounded the Mules 56-23, with Liz Wood pulling down 13 of those to go along with her 8 points. It was the most rebounds Maine has had in any game since 2005.
Maine, now winners of three straight games, had 14 players in the game have at least one field goal. The Bears shot 46 percent from the floor as a team (33-72) and also had 22 assists and 12 steals and at one point led by as many as 42 points at 67-25.
Koizar also had 4 rebounds and 3 assists to go along with her double figure scoring, Chantelle Charles had 11 and Sheraton Jones also chipped in with 9 to lead the point getters. Colby got 9 from Mia Diplock and 8 points from Carylanne Wolfington in their first loss of the season. Maine also continued their hot shooting from behind the arc, hitting eight three pointers.
Maine (6-3) will now hit the road to face Northeastern in Boston on Friday with gametime scheduled for noon.
