DEXTER– Megan Peach recorded 18 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks to lead the Dexter Tigers girls basketball team to a 34-26 win over Schenck on Thursday evening at Ed Guiski Gymnasium.

Schenck held a 7-4 lead after the first quarter. Katie Batron made a free throw to cut the deficit to 7-5. Taylor McLaughlin made a three pointer to expand the Schenck lead to 10-5. Peach took over from that point, she went on an 8-0 to give the Tigers a 13-10 lead. Dexter held a 14-12 halftime lead. The Tigers were not trying anything different than they were during the first quarter. Peach was able to convert her opportunities better after the first eight minutes. She scored eight points in the second quarter, and six more in the third quarter.

“I think they were going to me the whole time,”Peach said. I just couldn’t make a layup.”

The Tigers had seven seniors on their roster last season. This year, the junior Peach will be looked at more as a leader along with Batron and Skyler Theodore, who are the only two seniors on the 2015/2016 Tigers roster.

“We have to be able to play without turning the ball over. We have to take care of the ball, we can’t just play defense the entire time. Schenck is a good team. We kind of got rattled, before we settled in. We have to learn from that. We were rushing early, we need to keep the game simple,”Dexter coach Jody Grant said.”For this group, it is a whole new experience for every one of them, including Megan, who is more of a leader than she was a year ago.”

Peach and Kayli Cunningham combined for all 10 of the Tigers points in the third quarter, as they held a 24-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter. McLaughlin made two three pointers in the third quarter to keep the Wolverines in the contest. Theodore and Abby Webber sealed the game with free throws down the stretch. Theodore made two in the fourth quarter, while Webber went 4-4.

“Those were huge, it stretched the lead out a bit. That gave us a chance to exhale,”Grant said.  “Abby (Webber) made four big ones.”

Dexter (3-0) will host PCHS on Saturday afternoon. The game can be heard live at 12:50 PM on Eastern Maine Sports.
