GUILFORD- When the Central Red Devils girls basketball team needed a big play on Monday night, Sydney Allen made that play. The sophomore finished with 15 points, eight assists, and four steals in leading the Red Devils to a 44-32 victory over the Piscataquis community high school (PCHS) Pirates.
The Pirates took a quick 4-1 lead. The Red Devils went on an 8-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. Allen had six points and one assist during the run. Lexi Harris cut the deficit to 11-10 with 5:55 left in the second quarter. Allen set up Rachel Smith to get the lead to 13-10 for Central. They got the advantage to 18-12, before the Pirates went on a 6-2 run to end the half.
The Red Devils went on a 5-0 run to start the second half to take a 25-18 lead. The lead never got below four the rest of the way, and Central built it up to 34-23 by the end of the third quarter. Libby Cook scored six points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Cook recorded 11 points, seven rebounds, and two steals, while Emily Smith added eight points, four rebounds, and two steals. Central (3-3) will travel to Washington Academy this Wednesday.
Delani Bennett led the Pirates with 10 points, six rebounds, six blocks, and two assists despite being limited due to an injury. Erin Speed added seven points, five rebounds, and four assists. Alivia Hunt came off the bench to score six points, while Lexi Harris contributed four points, eight rebounds, and two steals. PCHS (4-2) is scheduled to host Lee Academy on Wednesday night.
