Brewer- The Brewer Witches boys basketball team put four players in double figures and built a big early Thursday night and then cruised in the second half to take down visiting Waterville 89-41 in KVAC Class A action at the Brewer High School gymnasium.
Brewer built a 20 point first quarter lead and led 24-6 after the opening period led by 10 early points from Carter Smith. Waterville would make a run on three straight 3 point shots from Alan Martin to cut a 21 point lead down to 12 at 32-20 but the Witches would go on a 13-0 run to increase the lead back to 25 and had a 20 point halftime lead at 45-25.
Brewer put the game away by starting the third quarter on a 19-2 run to go up by 37 including 11 points from senior captain Matt Pushard who was held to 7 points in the first half. Brewer led 70-30 after three by outscoring the Panthers 25-5 in the third and increased the lead to as many as 48 points in the final period which was the final margin of victory.
Brewer (9-1) was led by Smith who ended with 20 points. Pushard had 18, Kobe Rogerson 16 points and freshman Damien Vance chipped in 13. Brewer hit 12 three pointers on the evening.
Waterville (3-7) was led by senior captain Justin Kernsey who had 14 points while Martin finished with 12, all on four 3 pointers.
Brewer returns to action next Tuesday, January 12th at 6:30 p.m. when they travel to Oceanside. Waterville plays host to Lawrence of Fairfield on Saturday at 1 p.m.
