CORINTH— The high school basketball tournament does not start until next month, but a tournament feel was in the air at Central high school on Wednesday evening.Grace Bickford and Abi Simpson each recorded a double double in leading the Foxcroft Ponies to a 46-43 class B girls basketball victory over Central.
The Ponies scored the first six points of the game and jumped out to a 10-1 lead. Foxcroft led 12-5 after the first quarter. The Red Devils went on a 9-2 run that extended into the second quarter and cut the deficit to 14-12 with 5-10 remaining in the first half. Foxcroft responded with a 5-0 run to get the lead up to 19-12.
Central went on an 8-1 run that was capped by a Kaylee Townsend basket and free throw as the Red Devils evened the score at 20. Foxcroft went to halftime with a 24-21 lead.
Foxcroft scored the first basket of the second half to take a 26-21 lead. Central scored the next six points and took their first lead of the game (27-26) on a Libby Cook basket with five minutes left in the third quarter.
Cook gave Central another lead on a basket early in the fourth quarter. Bickford evened the score at 36. Cook gave the Red Devils a 38-36 advantage with five minutes remaining in regulation.
Madison Chadbourne tied the score at 38, and Ali Bourget scored her only points of the game when she nailed a three pointer with 3:35 remaining that gave Foxcroft a 41-38 lead. . Chadbourne put the Ponies ahead 43-40. Sydney Allen hit game tying shots on three different occasions in the second half, including a three pointer to even the score at 43 with 1:18 remaining. Simpson scored the only three points in the final 78 seconds as the Ponies secured a key victory.
Simpson finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, and three assists. Bickford recorded 11 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks. Chadbourne chipped in with eight points and four rebounds. Foxcroft (7-5) will travel to Presque Isle on Monday afternoon.
Cook led the Red Devils with a game high 15 points, Allen added 14 points, including 3 three pointers. Kaitlyn Pinkham added seven points, while Kaylee Townsend came off the bench to score three points and pull down nine rebounds, Central (5-6) will host PCHS on Friday evening, you can hear that game live at Eastern Maine Sports Broadcasting starting at 6:45 PM.
