DEXTER— The talk around class C north boys basketball has been about George Stevens, Bucksport, Lee Academy, Schenck, and Fort Fairfield. The Dexter Tigers gave everybody something to talk about as they defeated Schenck 58-48 at Ed Guiski gymnasium on Thursday evening,
Schenck jumped out to a 12-2 lead, but the Tigers ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 12-9. Dexter ended the first half on a 12-3 run, as they went into halftime with a 24-19 lead.
“We wanted to control the pace a little bit. At the start we didn’t do a very good job at that, they had a very fast pace going,”Dexter coach Peter Murray said. “We settled down and we understood what our pace was going to be. I liked the halftime score, that was the type of score we wanted.”
The third quarter belonged to Brayden Miller. He put in 10 of the Tigers 14 points, including 4-5 from the free throw line during the quarter. Miller also had the assignment of guarding Schenck standout junior Justin Thompson for the majority of the game. Foul trouble and the defense of Miller held Thompson to 15 points. Miller finished with a game high 20 points, he also pulled down nine rebounds and dished out four assists.
“Zach (White) had Justin (Thompson) to start with, he (White) picked up two quick fouls and it was too early in the game to waste any (fouls) at that point, “Murray said. “Brayden (Miller) had to take him (Thompson), Brayden did a great job on him. Brayden is a great player for us, once we got them playing man to man, they had a difficult time guarding him down under the basket.”
Jason Campbell made 7-8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Tigers. Campbell finished with 14 points and five rebounds. White scored 13 points, including 11 in the second half. Joshua Simcock made two three pointers in the second quarter and pulled down seven rebounds.
Dexter (9-3) jumped up to fifth in the class C Maine Principals’ Association. The Tigers still have heal point worthy games left on the schedule against Orono, Bucksport, and PVHS. They will next play on Tuesday, January 19th when they host PCHS.
Justin Thompson recorded 17 rebounds, five assists, and two steals to go along with his 15 points. Christopher King led the Wolverines with 16 points. Travis Thompson chipped in with nine points. Schenck (9-2) is currently fourth in the class C north heal point standings. The Wolverines still have heal point worthy games remaining against Lee Academy, PVHS, and Fort Kent.
