Black Bear defense stifles UMBC in blowout win

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND- The University of Maine Women’s basketball team has made it a habit this season of holding their opponents down offensively. Saturday afternoon they did it again. Bella Swan poured in a career high 21 points to lead the Black Bears to an easy 72-38 victory over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County at the Retrievers Activities Center.

Maine opened a 14 point lead in the early going and held a 12 point lead after the first quarter. UMBC would make a small run to cut the Maine lead to eight before the Bears regrouped for a 7-2 run to take a 13 point lead into halftime.

A 12-2 run in the third quarter increased the Maine lead to 23 and the Bears were on cruise control. Maine opened the lead to as many as 37 in the fourth quarter to secure their sixth consecutive win.

Sigi Koizar continued her sizzling play as she contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Liz Wood also had 10 points.

Maine held UMBC to just 28 percent shooting from the floor while the Retrievers turned the ball over 20 times leading to 25-6 points off turnover advantage for the Bears. Maine shot the ball at a 48% clip for the game and also knocked in seven three pointers.

UMBC (13-10, 4-6 America East) was led by Taylor McCarley who had 14 points. The Retrievers will travel to Stony Brook Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest.

Maine who improves to 18-7 overall and 9-1 in America East will look to extend their 16 game home winning steak on Monday night at the Cross Insurance Center as they host UNH. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
