BANGOR– The Houlton girls basketball team shot 17-18 from the free throw line, including 6-7 down the stretch in a 61-52 class B north quarterfinal victory over Foxcroft at the Cross Insurance Center on Saturday afternoon,
Houlton started quickly, jumping out to a 23-12 lead after the first quarter. Aspen Flewelling scored eight points, including making a pair of three pointers in the first eight minutes. The Shiretowners held a 33-23 halftime lead.
Foxcroft outscored Houlton 17-8 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 41-40 heading into the fourth quarter. The Ponies took their only lead (44-43) when Grace Bickford made a running shot early in the fourth quarter. The Shiretowners followed that with an 8-1 run. Kolleen Bouchard, Natalie Hill, and Rylee Warman each made two free throws in the final three minutes to secure a trip to the semifinals for the Shiretowners.
Bouchard led the way for Houlton (18-1) with 23 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, and two assists. Flewelling added 13 points (3 three pointers), while Warman chipped in with nine points, and Hill recorded eight points, seven rebounds, and two assists. The Shiretowners will take on Winslow in a class B semifinal game in Wednesday night.
Kendra Ewer led the way for the Ponies with 15 points, all on three pointers. Ewer also had five assists, and three rebounds. Bickford recorded 12 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Mackenzie Beaudry came off the bench to score 10 points. Abi Simpson scored seven points and pulled down five rebounds. Foxcroft finishes the season with an 11-9 record.
