BANGOR- The Penobscot Valley (PVHS) girls basketball team built a late fourth quarter lead only to have the Schenck Wolverines rally late for a chance to send the game to overtime. But the Howlers were able to do just enough to advance to the semifinal round Friday with 40-37 victory in a Maine Principals’ Association Class C North quarterfinal game Tuesday night at the Cross Insurance Center.
A very closely contested game in the first half as neither team had more than a three point lead. Schenck junior guard Anna Sewall had all 10 of her points in the half while Sam Ireland had 8 for PVHS and the game was tied at halftime 21 a piece.
An early 5-0 third quarter run gave the Howlers the five point advantage but Schenck was able to cut it to three as the quarter ended. PVHS had a five point late into the fourth quarter with just 43.8 seconds left. Schenck senior forward Kayla Falone would convert on a pair of free throws to cut it down to three. Forced to foul, the Wolverines sent PVHS senior guard Amy Hallet to the line for a one and one situation. Hallet would miss the front end giving the Howlers a final chance. Chantel Lane got a good look at a three point attempt with five seconds remaining but the ball bounced off the side of the rim and went out of bounds as the final horn sounded.
For Schenck, who finishes up their season at 14-5, Falone led the way with 12 points and 6 rebounds while Lane and Sewall finished with 10 points a piece.
The PVHS Howlers, now 15-4, were led by Judy King who had 13 points, including four three pointers. Ireland finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds while Arianna McKinnon had 8 points and Hallet had 7.
Fourth seeded Penobscot Valley will now play in the semifinal round on Friday at 3:35 p.m. when they face the top seeded Fort Fairfield Tigers who were victorious in Tuesday’s second quarterfinal.
