Comeback win highlights Maine softball doubleheader split with Penn

The University of Maine softball team battled back from an 8-3 deficit to get a 10-9 victory in 10 innings over Penn in game 1 of a doubleheader.on Tuesday morning at Clearwater, Florida.

Rachel Carlson, Rachel Harvey, and Alyssa Derrick had three hits each to lead the Black Beats attack. Harvey scored three runs, while Meghan Royle had four RBI to go along with two hits (including a home run), and two runs scored.

Royle doubled home Harvey and Kristen Niland doubled home Royle to even the score at eight in the sixth inning and eventually send the game to extra innings.

The Black Bears took a lead when Derrick hit a single to score Felicia Lennon in the top of the eighth inning. Penn scored an unearned run during the bottom of the eighth inning to send the game to the ninth inning.

Maine scored the go ahead run on a Lennon grounder that scored Carlson during the top of the 10th inning. Annie Kennedy pitched 8.1 innings of relief to earn the victory in the circle. Kennedy worked around an error in the bottom of the 10th inning to close things out. She only allowed one earned run on six hits.

In the second game, the Black Bears were slowed down by Alexis Sargent. Carlson, Royle, Janelle Bouchard, and Chloe Douglass recorded the only hits in a 3-0 Black Bears loss to Penn. Molly Flowers took the loss in the circle for Maine. Flowers allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out six. Maine (2-1) will play Western Michigan at Clearwater on Wednesday,
