The Maine Black Bears baseball team dropped their final two games of their spring trip in Lakeland, Florida Sunday afternoon, losing to Massachusetts 10-1 before coming up short against Dartmouth 4-2.
In Game one, it was all Minutemen. Dylan Morris had four hits and three runs batted in while Hunter Carey had three hits and another two knocked in as UMass (3-7) pounded Maine starter Nick Silva to take a 6-0 lead after five innings and never looked back. Silva allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 4.1 innings pitched, dropping to 1-1 on the season.
Maine got their lone run on an RBI double by Patrick Coughlin in the top of the eighth inning. Justin Lasko (2-0) earned the win on the mound for UMass allowing only four hits and an earned run with six strikeouts and no walks in eight innings thrown.
In Game two, Maine took an early lead on an unearned run in the bottom of the first to make it 1-0. Dartmouth fought back to take the lead in the top of the third taking advantage of two Black Bear errors and eventually got an unearned run to take a 2-1 lead.
Caleb Kerbs got Maine back to even at 2-2 with a run scoring single in the bottom of the fifth. Dartmouth (3-9) would get the game deciding hit from Justin Fowler in the top of the seventh on a two run single with the bases loaded to give the Big Green the 4-2 lead and the win.
Eddie Emerson started on the mound for Maine and was solid over four innings allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with a strikeout and a walk. Charlie Butler (1-3) was the tough luck loser allowing three hits and two runs in 0.2 innings pitched in the game deciding seventh inning. Michael Danielak (1-1) went the distance for Dartmouth allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits, nine strikeouts and no walks.
Maine is now 5-15 on the season and will open up their America East Conference schedule at home this coming Saturday with a three game series against Binghamton. Doubleheader seven inning contests Saturday begin at 1 p.m. at Mahoney Diamond with a single nine inning game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
