Australia, Virginia join Illinois and Maine in the semifinals at the Senior League World Series

The Southern Mariners Senior League team from Melbourne, Australia outscored opponents 82-5 in going 5-0 in cruising to the Asia-Pacific championship.

Southern Mariners fell to Clear Ridge L.L. from Chicago, Illinois 13-8 in their first game at the Senior League World Series on Monday. On Tuesday, they won a pitching duel 2-1 over San Antonio, Texas. On Wednesday night, they got their bats working again in a 13-7 win over Puerto Rico. With that win, they became only the second Asia-Pacific team to qualify for the semifinals since the series has been in Bangor.

The team from Australia will take on the host team Bronco-Hermon at 8 p.m. On Thursday night. It is the third straight year that the host team has qualified for the semifinals. The Maine District 3 champion reached the world championship game in 2010. Bangor fell 8-1 to the team from Aruba in that title game.

In the final game of the double elimination tournament on Thursday night, Dumfries District L.L., from Dumfries, Virginia defeated the U.S. West champion from Hawaii 9-1. It is Dumfries second semifinal appearance in three years.

Dumfries will take on Clear Ridge in a semifinal game on Thursday at 5 p.m. Clear Ridge outscored opponents 30-9 in three games so far at the World Series.
