BANGOR- Anthony Stehlin fired 4.2 innings of solid baseball on the mound Wednesday night to lead Dumfries, Virginia into a semifinal game Thursday by defeating Wailuke, Hawaii 9-1 in a Senior League World Series game at Shawn T. Mansfield Stadium.
Dumfries took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on RBI singles from Jackson Lowery and Joseph Cofer. Virginia extended that lead to 3-0 on an RBI single by Tristan Thorgerson in the third.
Hawaii was able to record its first hit until Waylon Bacos hit a fourth inning double.
Virginia pulled away in their half of the fourth inning on a two run double from Carson Arguin and a two run single from Stehlin to make it 7-0.
Hawaii got on the board in the fifth on a Iokepa Supnet RBI single to make it 7-1. Virginia finished the scoring on the night on RBI hits from Darien Porter and Devin Logsdon in the bottom of the sixth.
Stehlin got the win on the hill for Virginia allowing just one run, two hits, no walks and six strikeouts in the 4.2 innings thrown.
Tuionetoa was the loser as he allowed three runs, five hits, one walk and four strikeouts in just 2.1 innings.
Hawaii manager Shane Awai said after the game, “Like I always say, a team that wins is well prepared. Always preparing for the next team. And as coaches, I guess we didn’t do good enough of a job to prepare our team. This team has also been on the road for three weeks and fatigued probably played a factor. But no excuses, Virginia came to play us today and did what they needed to do to beat us”.
Dumfries, Virginia manager Tim Jabs also commented after the win and on beating Hawaii after losing to them earlier in the week, “The difference today was we didn’t make any errors and we hit the ball the way these guys can hit the ball and that’s exactly what I told them before the game. Hit the ball, keep the errors away and we don’t let them beat us this time”. When asked about how to prepare for the matchup Thursday with Chicago, Jabs responded, “We don’t really prepare for the other team we just make our guys play the way they are supposed to play. We got our pitching in line and we have been working that pretty well so we should be in pretty good shape”.
Dumfries, Virginia will meet Clear Ridge Little League out of Chicago, Illinois in the first semifinal of the evening on Thursday at 5 p.m.
