Penquis boys soccer starts season with win over Dexter

DEXTER—- Colin Beckett and Dereck Thomas each scored one goal to lead the Penquis Patriots to a 2-1 victory over Dexter on Thursday afternoon.

The Tigers got the scoring started when freshman Nathan Richards took an assist from Ethan Boutilier and put the ball in the back of the net with 36:17 remaining in the first half.

The Patriots were playing in their regular season opener, while the Tigers were playing in their third game of the season. Penquis got their motor going late in the first half. Beckett evened the score at 1 with 12:57 remaining in the first half.

Freshman goalie Cameron Bailey made sure the Patriots would not give back the lead, as he recorded nine saves overall. Thomas scored the eventual game winning goal with 21:16 remaining on the clock. Penquis (1-0) will play their home opener on Monday against Central.

Matthew Richards recorded seven saves for the Tigers. Richards played offense for the final 11:45 of the game. Matthew Hanscome stopped two shots in his brief time in goal, Dexter (0-3) will play at Foxcroft Academy on Monday.
