UMaine Sports Roundup Sept 24-25

While the UMaine Football team dropped a tough 31-20 decision to #11 James Madison in the home opener Saturday, several other UMaine sports were in action over the weekend on the womens side.

In Field Hockey, the #19 University of Maine Black Bears split a pair of games.

On Saturday, Maine got four different goal scorers to knock off Northeastern 4-3 in overtime at Boston.
Samantha Wagg, Lydia Gavner and Danielle Aviani scored regulation goals while Sydney Velijacic scored her first of the year 42 seconds into the extra session to lead the Bears to the win.

On Sunday, Maine dropped a 3-1 decision to Harvard in Boston. The Crimson built a 3-0 lead halfway through the second half before Aviani got Maine on the board.

Maine attempted 10 shots on goal with seven making it on net in the second half compared to just three shots attempted by Harvard but couldn’t rally.

Maine is now 7-3 on the season and will open up America East Conference play on Friday at UMass Lowell at 7 p.m.

 

The University of Maine Womens Soccer team scored a 1-0 home win over Vermont in the conference opener Sunday.

The first career goal by Genaya Loftis in the seventh minute proved to be the game winner as Maine improved to 5-3-0 and 1-0-0 in America East.

Vermont outshot Maine 10-4 but Maine keeper Samantha Cobotic turned away all 10 shots in her first start of the season to get the shutout.

Maine continues America East play when they travel to UMass Lowell Thursday night at 7 p.m.

 

The Maine Womens Ice Hockey team split their season openers this weekend at Alfond Arena.

The visiting Engineers from RPI opened the series with a 3-1 win Saturday evening before Maine gained the split with a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Kara Washer and Tereza Vanisova both scored to help Maine to victory. Vanisova also assisted on what proved to be the game winner by Washer.

Senior goalie Mariah Fujimagari stopped all 20 shots to pick up the shutout as Maine goes to 1-1.

Maine goes on the road next weekend traveling to Connecticut to battle Quinnipiac for a pair of non conference games on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.
