Rob McGovern made 39 saves Friday night to help lead the University of Maine Mens Ice Hockey team to a 3-3 tie with Miami (Ohio) at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio.
Peter Housakos scored his first collegiate goal for Maine in the first period unassisted to give the Bears a 1-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.
Miami (1-1-2) responded at 5:29 of the second period to tie the score at 1-1 on a goal from Grant Hutton. Freshman sensation Mitchell Fossier scored just 1:29 later though to give Maine back the lead at 2-1. For Fossier, it was his sixth goal in his fifth game.
Miami evened the game again at 13:02 when Anthony Louis scored to make it 2-2, and that is the way it stood headed to the third period.
Maine (3-1-1) would again retake the lead when Cedric Lacroix scored unassisted with 6:26 left in the third to make it 3-2. Louis would score his second goal of the night on the powerplay for the Redhawks just over two minutes later to send the game to overtime. Neither team could get anything done in the extra session as the shots were just 2-1 Miami. Freshman netminder Ryan Larkin made 18 saves for Miami as the home team outshot the visitors 42-21.
The two teams will meet again Saturday to finish off the two game series. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
