The Husson University Eagles football team set a school record with their ninth straight victory Saturday afternoon by defeating Mount Ida 54-20 in an Eastern Collegiate Football Conference game at Alumni Field in Newton, Massachusetts.
Husson (9-1, 7-0 ECFC) built a 41-7 halftime lead and cruised to another victory and will await the announcement Sunday at 6 p.m. on who and where they will play in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Cory Brandon went 17-23 passing, for 200 yards, and five touchdowns. Brandon became the first quarterback to surpass the 2,000 yard mark passing and also the first player in school history to surpass 2,000 total yards of offense. His 23 passing touchdowns also set a school record, topping the 19 thrown by Joe Seccarccia last year.
John Smith rushed for 90 yards on 19 carries and a pair of touchdowns, while receiver DJ Allen caught a pair of scores, and Deon Wiggins and Tyler Bassett also hauled in touchdowns from Brandon. the Eagles outgained the home standing Mustangs in total yards 425-90.
The defense who is ranked first in the country was solid once again only allowing just two Mutangs first downs and was led by Quan Soyini who had five total tackles. The Eagles secondary picked off three passes.
Mount Ida, who finishes 4-6 overall and 4-3 in the ECFC, was led by quarterback Jack Sheehan who was 5-18 passing, 115 yards, one touchdowns and two interceptions. Matt Greenman also had an 85 yard kickoff return for a score.
